Blog Lesson 2 - Why Blog?

Different people blog for different reasons. There are three different types of blogs (as I see it).

Personal

Personal blogs are about someone’s life. Most of the members here on British Parent Bloggers are personal bloggers, focusing specifically on their lives as a parent. Although you might think these ‘personal style’ blogs are filled with idle chit chat (and some are, and there’s nothing wrong with that) there are many other positive features.

Sharing experiences, tips and advice for a start. I recently highlighted this article as the epitome of why personal bloggers, especially parents, blog. Read through the comments, several others have added their own unique viewpoint and experiences to the conversation. The difference between a blog and a traditional parenting website is stark. The parenting website feeds you information from an ‘expert’ mixed with advertisements. The blog provides several viewpoints from your fellow ‘comrades in the trenches’, which together make up the expert voice, occasionally the odd (genuine) recommendation of a product is thrown in for good measure (more on this later on in the series).

It’s also a great way to make friends. I’ve recently attended two blogger meet-ups, and although we are in the minority, I expect that over the coming months we will see these meet ups become more commonplace, and more populated, as we see the british parent blogger community grow.

Niche Topic

These blogs are tightly focused on a specific topic. Blogs cover a wide range of topics, in fact, many people believe there is a blog on just about anything you can think of, chocolate, spanish writing, cooking, managing your money, ….

Notice that these blogs rarely talk about anything personal unless it relates to the niche topic. Many of them also make money from their blogs (more on this later on in the series).

The main reasons for these bloggers is that they are passionate about their topic and/or they make money by monetizing their blog or selling spin off products or promoting a related business.

Business

These blogs exist to make money or promote an offline business. For example if you run an online craft business you might set up a blog and publish articles on how your products are produced, new products in store, or to advertise promotions. Some people make money directly from their blog by selling adverts, affiliate products or producing their own product to sell (more on that later).

So as you can see, there are many different types of bloggers, and reasons ‘why’ people blog. Here is a list of reasons why parents (in particular) blog.

  1. Hi Vicky,

I’m really glad you’ve decided to start your personal blog back up - I used to really enjoy it :)

I don’t there is a blogger meet up for the whole of the UK (yet!) but I’m happy to promote any meet ups.

I think we should definitely look into arranging a UK meet up, that would be so much fun.

  2. I like your paragraph on personal blogs. They are much more accessible than commercial websites. I know that I have struggled to keep my points of view to myself on Little Legends so I am going to try to revive my personal blog. It needs a lot of TLC!

Do let me know about any blogger meet ups that happen in the UK. If there isn’t one already, maybe we should arrange one?
