Completely agree. Every parent should focus on getting their children to get into the habit of educational activities, rather than letting the television and video games mold their minds.

Thanks for your comment Paula. You are absolutely right to stress the importance of boys seeing their dads reading and that it isn't just a girl thing.
I'm off to check out your site!

I really agree, I wasn't read to that much as a child and spent a long time being a very slow reader, both to myself and out loud. I read something the other day that say that literally the inchage (is that a word?) of books that you have in your home relates to your child's own love of books and that it's especially important for boys to see their dads reading and that it's not just a 'girls thing'.

Barefoot Books (which I sell at www.mybarefootbooks.com/PaulaBrown, sorry for shameless plugging but it's because I genuinely think they are important books) believe that the artwork and traditional stories are very appealing and helpful to children AND are great to read as parents, enhancing the whole experience and making it a special, bonding time.

Hi Em, thanks for your comment, I've pleased you found the article helpful. Your situation highlights the importance of encouraging children to read and the impact it has on you when that does not happen. It's unfortuate you had such a negative experience as a child but great news that you are aware of the importance of reading/being read to/listening you our children and that you are going out there to make sure things are different for your old child. Its wonderful that you are doing this. Hope you enjoy all the wonderful books out there and sharing them with your family.

Many thanks Jo! I could not live without books either. Your children have clearly benefitted from all your input.

Superb articale, I never was read to or listened to when young, so as i realised as i have got older that my spelling and reading was very poor and over the last 5years i have had to put some work in and i am still not great. I never want my child to end up like i have, my husband is very clever and comes from a very well educated family and i put that down to the fact that reading and been given the time has been a huge influence. Thanks for the links, i am off to look now!
